Neglected Tropical Diseases

Alan Fenwick, Professor of Topical Parasitology at Imperial College London, was the guest speaker at Oakend Wayfarers in March 2006. The subject on which he spoke, “Neglected Tropical Diseases” is also the subject of much of his life’s work. He is indeed a world authority. His presentation was most moving and showed that for a very small amount of money, the lives of literally millions of people could be significantly improved and lengthened; freeing them from debilitating and life threatening parasitic infestations, such as bilharzia (also known as schistosomiasis).

Neglected Tropical Diseases became the 2006-2007 project for our church. A considerable amount of money was raised throughout the year, and other generous donations were also received. A cheque for £1100 was presented to Professor Fenwick in Autumn 2006 and was subsequently sent to a Christian
